Reveley announces pending retirement of College's provost
William and Mary President W. Taylor Reveley III sent the following e-mail to faculty, staff and students Tuesday regarding the retirement announcement of Provost P. Geoffrey Feiss. —Ed.
Dear William & Mary Community,
I write to say that our provost, Geoff Feiss, has decided to retire at the end of the 2008/09 school year. Geoff wanted to retire last June but was persuaded to remain another year. Further efforts to keep him in our midst have proved unavailing.
Geoff has vast knowledge of American higher education. He has brought that knowledge to bear for the College, first as dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and then as provost. Geoff has made a very significant difference for the better at William & Mary, playing a leading role in shaping its academic life. He has done so with a remarkably soothing bedside manner and a delightful sense of humor. He has provided vital aid and comfort to me during the last seven months. We have worked together seamlessly for the good of the university and will continue to do so this academic year.
A committee to search nationally for our next provost will be in place very soon, with a view to finishing next spring.
William & Mary will greatly miss Provost Feiss. There will be appropriate celebratory rites, all in due course. For now, he has a lot of work yet to do this academic year!
