College admits diverse class for 2012
(Williamsburg, Va.) – Building off the strength of its largest, most diverse and academically accomplished applicant pool ever, the College of William and Mary’s group of admitted students includes another record number of first-generation College students and a significant increase in students of color.
Acceptance letters to both in-state and out-of-state students were
mailed recently to 3,800 prospective students, who were chosen from a
record number of more than 11,600 applicants. The admitted group
includes 1,207 students of color, a 16.7 percent increase over last
year’s admitted group. The number of first-generation College students
admitted is 400, up from last year’s record of 383 students.
“We knew that this year’s record applicant pool would enable us to
admit the best and brightest and most diverse class we’ve ever seen at
the College,” said Earl T. Granger, the College’s associate provost for
enrollment. “This is a talented group of students who have
distinguished themselves inside and outside the classroom. We look
forward to welcoming them to the William and Mary family.”
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions received 11,622 applications for
this year’s class – a 6.8 percent increase from last year’s 10,845
applications. The College expects to enroll an entering class of
approximately 1,350 students in the fall.
“We are thrilled with this group of admitted students and the
possibilities they represent for this College,” said Henry Broaddus,
dean of admission. “This is a diverse group that not only brings a
range of experiences and backgrounds to campus but some of the
strongest academic credentials we’ve ever seen.”
