Student Health Center receives accreditation and excellence award
The College of William and Mary’s Student Health
Center recently achieved national accreditation status for the second
time and received an award for excellence for its laboratory.
“Nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our
students. That makes quality health care essential,” said Sam Sadler,
vice president for student affairs. “We are fortunate to have a staff
in our Student Health Center whose goal is to be nothing less than the
best of the best. To see their efforts recognized nationally is a
powerful affirmation of the excellence of their work, and it is the
source of tremendous pride.”
The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care awarded the
center a three-year term of accreditation status in July based on
results from a survey conducted in April. According to the AAAHC,
accreditation is a voluntary process through which ambulatory health
care organizations are able to measure the quality of their services
and performance against nationally recognized standards. The William
and Mary center received its first accreditation status three years
ago.
In addition to achieving accreditation status again in July, the center
was also recognized with a Laboratory Excellence Award from COLA, a
national healthcare accreditation organization. The award is given to
COLA-accredited laboratories that are found to be compliant with all
COLA essential and required criteria at the time of their on-site
survey, have demonstrated successful proficiency testing for the prior
three testing events and have no valid complaints against them.
“To receive these awards is a wonderful affirmation from these national
organizations regarding the work that we do,” said Dr. Gail Moses,
director of the facility. “These rewards are the result of hard work
and dedication from the entire staff at the Health Center. I am very
proud to be a part of this great team.”
William and Mary’s Student Health Center is in operation year-round and provides students with a variety of healthcare services, including physical exams, care of acute and chronic medical conditions, vaccinations, substance abuse education and prevention, laboratory services, pharmacy services and evaluation and treatment of mental health disorders. The center is run by a staff of about 26 employees who attend to an average of 100 to 125 patients per day. The center functions as a primary medical care facility and includes a full pharmacy and laboratory.
