Demolition work to begin at site of future School of Education
Demolition work of the former Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital on Monticello Avenue will begin on Sept. 4, 2007.
The demolition work, which will continue over the next three months, is the next step in plans to relocate the College of William and Mary’s School of Education in a new, state-of-the-art facility on the former hospital site.
Demolition of the former hospital building will be conducted by S.B. Cox of Richmond. Work will begin with hand crews removing non-masonry and non-metal components. The remainder of the demolition will be conducted by crews operating hydraulic excavators. Demolition work is expected to be complete by the end of November. During that time, work will begin by 8 a.m. each day. Construction of the 109,000-square-foot School of Education building is expected to begin in the summer of 2008 and be completed by spring 2010.
While work is being conducted, the College will continue to utilize parking at the site -- 215 spaces at the site have been reserved for student parking.
