W&M to host forum on "Voices of Our Latino Community"
The College of William and Mary will host a community forum next month entitled "Voices of Our Latino Community."
The forum, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. on Nov. 13 in the University Center on campus. The forum will include members of the local Latino community who work regularly with families and individuals in the greater Williamsburg area. The forum will be facilitated by Monica Griffin, director of William and Mary's Sharpe Community Scholars Program, and Catherine Schwenkler, of the College's Office of Public Affairs."It is an opportunity to hear more about the experiences of Latino community members, and engage in dialogue about diversity and language in the greater Williamsburg area," Schwenkler said.
Presenters include Ana Romero, who serves as a translator at the local courts; Gloria Morales, new coordinator of the Network for Latino People; and Linda Flores, an interpreter at Olde Towne Medical Center and a member of St. Bede's Hispanic ministry. The presenters will discuss different experiences of Latino immigrants in the area and challenges that they face. The will also be a question-and-answer session and forum attendees will have a chance to break into groups to discuss pertinent issues and opportunities to become involved.
