W&M Theater presents "As Bees in Honey Drown"

In no time at all, the second show of the William and Mary Theatre’s season, As Bees in Honey Drown, will be lighting up William and Mary’s Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall with a commentary on American culture’s obsession with fame and celebrity.

As Bees in Honey Drown boasts a widely acclaimed playwright Douglas Carter Beane, and enjoys the direction of Virginia Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director, Christopher Owens.

The play follows a “hot” new writer by the name of Evan Wyler as he begins what he believes to be his ascent into the lifestyle of the rich and famous. Wyler is whisked by the deliciously magnetic Alexa Vere de Vere into a world of limousines, VIP lounges and Saks only to discover Alexa, and her world, may not be as they appear. Surrounding Wyler throughout his journey is a montage of characters representing a cross section of the colorful personalities New York City has to offer. A cast composed completely of student talent, many playing several very diverse roles, brings to life a world of fabulous, glittering possibilities perched on the edge of disillusionment.

As Bees in Honey Drown will run Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. In true celebrity fashion, the play will have a red carpet opening in Thursday night, complete with local celebrities, paparazzi and a reception to follow. All performances begin at 8 p.m. with the exception of a 2 p.m. matinee Dec. 2.
