Lawrence Wilkerson to keynote Model U.N.
Lawrence Wilkerson, former Chief of Staff under
Secretary of State Colin Powell and the Harriman Visiting Professor of
Government and Public Policy at the College, will address the opening
ceremony of William and Mary’s 20th Annual High School Model United
Nations Conference Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the University Center,
Chesapeake Rooms A, B and C. The keynote address, titled "The United
Nations: If We Didn't Have It, We Would Have to Create It," is free and
open to the public.
The conference, sponsored by the
International Relations Club, brings approximately 1,200 high school
students from across the country to Williamsburg for the model U.N.
simulations. In the simulations students representing 52 high schools
assume the responsibilities of actual diplomats to resolve
international issues, basing their decisions on their represented
country’s past and present foreign policy. The conference will feature
25 committees – 10 General Assembly and 15 Specialized Agencies,
including modern cabinet scenarios and the U.N. Security Council - and
runs through Nov. 14. Committee sessions and cabinet meetings are open
to the delegates only.
