College holds open house for new dorms and rec center
The College of William and Mary will hold open houses this weekend of the new Jamestown Residence halls and the recently renovated and expanded Recreation Center. The events will be held Saturday, Oct. 7 from noon until 3 p.m. at both facilities and the public is invited to attend.
“This is an opportunity for us to bring the outside community to our campus so that they can get a firsthand look at these remarkable facilities,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Sam Sadler. “Everyone on campus has a great deal of pride in both facilities and we want to share that with the general public.”
Students at the Jamestown Residences will conduct guided tours of the first floor of the new buildings, which are located on Jamestown Road near Landrum Drive. Jamestown North and South dorm halls opened at the beginning of the fall 2006 semester and house nearly 400 students. These two, three-story state-of-the-art structures -- are the first new dorms built at William and Mary since Preston and Nicholas Halls, par of the Randolph Complex, which opened in the fall of 1989.
The Recreation Center staff will also open their building to the public. The renovated and expanded facility – located on campus at the corner of Brooks Street and Compton Drive -- was completed last month and includes a 40,000-square-foot expansion and renovation of 55,000 square feet of original facility, which opened in 1989. The new facility allows students, faculty and staff a recreation center with more than 10,000 square feet of cardio and weight space; a two-story rock climbing wall, juice bar, new exercise rooms, and a new multi-purpose court.
Both facilities are designed to achieve LEED environmental certification.
