Accommodation and Fees
FEES:
Accommodation fees (i.e., housing costs) at St Andrews vary based on your preferences about location, single or double rooms, hall bathrooms or suite-style bathrooms, and catering (what we call “meal plans”—catered halls provide meals). But they generally run between £6,000 and £9,000 for the entire year.
Fees may be paid over the course of two installments. There are a variety of ways to pay, including wire transfer, credit card, even cash. Note that you cannot make payments until you have a matriculation (St Andrews ID) number.
ACCOMMODATION:
Joint Programme students are guaranteed accommodation (on-campus housing) for all four years, provided all application and deposit deadlines are met and you remain in good academic standing. Once you’ve reviewed your possibilities for housing, you will complete the Entrant Undergraduate Accommodation Application Form. If this is your first year at St Andrews, the form is due between 1 April and 30 June. Returning students apply for housing the second week in February. You should submit your application early to have the best chance at your top choices—so any time after you receive your St. Andrews student ID (during Spring semester). You will submit your application online.
IMPORTANT: Where the form asks for “Exchange or scholarships held,” be sure to write “William & Mary Joint Degree Programme.” This will alert the staff to flag your application for priority assignment. The University of St. Andrews will then email you with an offer of accommodation.
Halls of residence will be open for move-in the Saturday before Orientation (fondly known as “Freshers Week”). You MUST be in Hall by the start of classes. Please check the St Andrews academic calendar for these and other relevant dates.
Please be aware that you MAY NOT ship belongings to the halls in advance of your arrival (you must already be in residence to receive shipments—they will not be stored for you).
A pillow and duvet are provided by your residence hall, but you will need to bring or buy your own bedding and towels (bedding packets may be purchased at the Online Shop and delivered to your room, and there are shops in town that offer bedding and towels at reasonable prices). You might pack an extra blanket as it does get fairly cold in the Fall/Early Spring, and blankets can be expensive in the town proper.
MEALS:
Catered halls typically serve 19 meals a week (there is no dinner served on weekends). Please note: meals are served only at specific times, though some dorms will offer a packed lunch or dinner if you have to miss a mealtime. Your halls will provide you with more specific information regarding meal times and menus. There are many restaurants, pubs, and cafes throughout the town, and the most convenient grocery store is the Tesco located on Market Street.
