Collaborative Projects
Undergraduate students collaborate on faculty-lead research projects all the time in William & Mary's Sociology Department. Depending on the project, you could be interviewing people, crunching some statistics, creating maps, or developing plans to create sustainable solutions to social problems. You could present your work at a conference or be listed as a co-author in a professional journal.
How to get involved
Take the time to explore the different projects described on these pages. If one interests you, follow the instructions for that project to get involved. Some will ask that you apply for a specific position. Some will want an email from you that expresses your interest. Other projects are part of a course or study away program.
If you have questions about a project, reach out to the project's Principal Investigator. Send an email or stop by during office hours. We are excited about our research, and would love the chance to get you excited about it, too.

Social Justice Policy Initiative
Social Justice Policy Initiative (SJPI) is a collection of individual projects that explore policy-oriented and community-based research and advocacy. In the SJPI, students and faculty collaborate with community organizations, policymakers, schools, and other groups in a wide range of areas including education, labor markets, housing, immigration, and food justice.
Border Studies
The Border Studies Program is a week-long immersion trip to the US-Mexican border region followed by a semester-long course. The immersion trip takes place during Winter Break. The trip and subsequent seminars are lead by two W&M professors -typically, one from Sociology and one from Hispanic Studies.
