Quark Named Sharpe Professor of Civic Renewal and Entrepreneurship
The Sharpe Community Scholars Program welcomes sociology professor Amy Quark as its new Sharpe Professor of Civic Renewal and Entrepreneurship. Quark will teach a new fall class, “Populating Early 20th Century Black Williamsburg,” as part of her three-year appointment.According to Dr. Monica Griffin, Director of Engaged Scholarship and the Sharpe Community Scholars Program, Quark brings longstanding integrity in the community relationships formed by the Village Initiative, her enduring work with neighborhood and family members in the Williamsburg community, and with William & Mary faculty and students.
“Prof. Quark’s model of consistency and constancy in community partnering will model for Sharpe Scholars not only what it means to know about community, but also, importantly, how to be a part of it effectively and productively with research,” Griffin said.
In her new course, Quark will introduce Sharpe Scholars to analyses of Black life and culture in 20th-century Williamsburg, incorporating interdisciplinary methods in community-based research and engagement that drives Sharpe’s mission. Students will work directly with descendant communities, local archivists, and experts across numerous fields.
“Williamsburg, Virginia stands as a symbol of democracy and freedom in the national and international imaginary. Yet, it is also emblematic of the deep tensions wrought by a nation founded in injustice,” Quark said.
