Tobolowsky Awarded Boyd Professorship
The Religious Studies department is honored to present Dr. Andrew Tobolowsky, associate professor of religious studies at William & Mary, who has been awarded the Robert & Sarah Boyd Distinguished Associate Professorship for 2023-2026. The professorship is in place to recognize high-achieving faculty and "reward excellence in research or creative activity and a demonstrated commitment to teaching." Professor Tobolowsky has expertise in topics of Greek mythology, Ancient Israel, and the Hebrew Bible. Last spring, he published "The Myth of the Twelve Tribes of Israel: New Identities Across Time and Space" which examines the history of the Israelite identity and what it truly means to be a tribe of Israel. While on sabbatical this past year he wrote a third book comparing ancient Israel to ancient Greece and their shared intellectual problems. Tobolowsky will use the awarded research stipend to further the research required for his fourth book for Cambridge University Press' Elements Series about constructions of Israelite identity in Late Antiquity between Jews, Christians, and Samaritans, as well as provide much-needed materials for his students to encourage their own excellence.
