Zinni Discusses 'America's Role in a Changed World' with public policy students
Following his lecture at the law school, Gen. Anthony Zinni
(U.S.M.C., ret.) met with the public policy students at an informal
luncheon here in our own MPR. He spoke to the students about his
lecture titled “America’s Role in a Changed World” and followed up
with a Q&A session. Afterwards, the students presented Gen.
Zinni with a Jefferson cup. 
For nearly 40 years, Gen. Zinni served in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising from a second lieutenant in command of an infantry company to a four-star general in charge of the U.S. Central Command—all the forces operating in a 25-nation area from the Horn of Africa to the steppes of Central Asia. He also has served at presidential behest in diplomatic missions to Ethiopia-Eritrea, and also in U.S. Department of State missions involving conflicts in the Middle East and the Philippines.
Since his retirement from the Marine Corps in 2000, Gen. Zinni
continued to serve his country as President George W. Bush’s special
envoy to the Middle East and as the special envoy to the Henri Dunant
Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. He has been a vocal critic of the
ongoing war in Iraq in interviews with the national media and also in a
chronicle of his career titled Battle Ready, co-written with Tom Clancy. 
Zinni, who serves as a distinguished visiting professor at William and Mary, was in-residence at the law school as the 2005 Carter O. Lowance Fellow in Law and Public Policy. The fellowship honors the extraordinary contributions of the late Carter O. Lowance, who served as chief of staff to six Virginia governors and was Executive Vice President of the College of William and Mary. Established in 1989, the fellowship brings a distinguished public servant to campus each year for several days of lectures, discussions and meetings with students and members of the College community.
