Mellor Elected to National Academy of Social Insurance
Earlier this year, Jennifer Mellor, Paul R. Verkuil Professor of Economics and Public Policy and director of the Schroeder Center for Health Policy, was elected to the National Academy of Social Insurance. Mellor is one of fifty-three experts on social insurance elected to the Academy as part of its Class of 2024.
“This newest cohort of Academy Members brings an inspiring range of perspectives to our mission,” says William Arnone, the Academy’s Chief Executive Officer. “We continue to rely on various types of expertise when it comes to the complex challenges facing social insurance policies and programs. We are excited to engage our newest Members in the Academy’s work going forward and to support their contributions to social insurance policy.”
The National Academy and its members study policies related to Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation and disability, as well as long-term services and supports. Mellor’s research expertise is in the areas of Medicare and long-term services and supports. She is the author of more than fifty peer-reviewed publications in economics and health policy journals, including numerous studies of Medicare payment policy and the provision of for long-term services and supports through the Medicaid program. Mellor also plays a lead role in the evaluation of Medicaid policies affecting seniors and people with disabilities for the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services. Her recent studies have focused on access to home and community-based services, the use of Medicaid value-based payment to promote nursing facility quality, and racial disparities in the quality of nursing facility care.
Academy Members are nominated by current Members in recognition of significant professional contributions, such as improving the quality of research, administration, or policymaking in an area of social insurance. Members make important contributions to the Academy’s research, education, and leadership development initiatives by serving on expert study panels, task forces, committees, and speaking at conferences and other Academy events.
