Full Description
In August 2024, computer science Ph.D. student Johnny Clapham, advised by Professor of Computer Science, Gang Zhou in the HealthComp research group, represented Motion Medix LLC in the W&M Entrepreneurship Hub’s Venture Acceleration Program, securing second place and a $2,000 prize. Motion Medix, a Virginia-based startup co-founded by W&M students and others, is built on research funded by NIH and VIPC. The company develops wearable devices to detect and treat Parkinson’s disease symptoms and reduce fall-related injuries in seniors.
The six-week program provides structured support for startups through mentorship, education, and networking, enabling business growth in the Greater Williamsburg area. The team received guidance on setting objectives, market research, financial planning, and venture pitching. Under Johnny’s leadership and Prof. Zhou’s research insights, the team’s work culminated in a successful showcase, where they impressed the judges and secured funding to advance their mission of improving mobility and independence for individuals with movement disorders.
