Professor Holmes and Professor Settle Make Tenure
On February 8th, 2018, the Board of Visitors approved tenure for Assistant Professors Marcus Holmes and Jaime Settle of the Government Department. They both will assume the title of Associate Professors this coming fall. The news of tenure comes with great celebration and little surprise; the two professors are universally admired and known for their passion for students and research. Holmes and Settle are wonderful permanent additions to the department.
“Professors Settle and Holmes are two reasons why Government is such an outstanding department and why we are known across the nation as a premier place for students interested in studying government and politics,” said Department Chair Paul Manna. “They are incredibly generous professors with their students and equally so with their faculty colleagues. It is such a pleasure to work with them side-by-side each day.”
Professor Holmes loves teaching in all forms at William and Mary. When asked about teaching here, he said, “My favorite part about teaching at W&M is definitely the ability to do a lot of teaching outside of the traditional classroom setting.” He currently directs the Political Psychology and International Relations lab and loves getting to know students one-on-one. Within the next two years, he hopes to co-publish a book examining “under what conditions leaders and diplomats are able to cultivate personal chemistry that can translate into better understanding and cooperation with one another.” Two undergraduate students help Holmes with book research.
Professor Settle directs the Social Networks and Political Psychology lab. Recently awarded the “Rising Star” award from State Council for Higher Education in Virginia, Settle is widely known for her research interests in social media and the psychology of polarization. “Students and faculty have strong momentum and a vision for the way they want things to be in the world,” she said. “I feel incredibly fortunate to be here and I absolutely love my job. I look forward to what’s coming next.”
