Professor Evgenia Smirni named ACM Distinguished Scientist
Professor Evgenia Smirni has been named a Distinguished Scientist by the Association for Computing Machinery, the premier professional organization for computer science. Dr. Smirni is joined by 29 others in receiving the 2013 Distinguished Scientist award and 10 Distinguished Engineers and Educators. All were chosen from among the ACM membership of more than 100,000 worldwide. Just over 55% of the Distinguished Scientist recipients were from USA universities. The rest were from leading international corporations and research institutions. Recipients must have at least 15 years of professional experience and have achieved significant accomplishments or have made a significant impact on the computing field.
ACM President Vinton G. Cerf described the recipients as “the problem solvers, prophets, and producers who are powering the future of the digital age.” He noted that these ACM members “are the driving force for enabling the computing community to change how we live and work. They demonstrate the advantages of ACM membership, which empowers self-improvement and inspires a bold vision for their own careers as well as their impact on the future.”
Dr. Smirni’s areas of research include performance evaluation, models for computer performance prediction, scheduling/load balancing, workload characterization, Markov Chains, matrix-analytic methods, departure process, performance tools, storage systems, web servers, data centers and cloud computing. Dr. Smirni currently supervises several doctoral students and serves as the Graduate Director for the Computer Science Department.
