Grayson interview appears back-to-back on NBC
If news happens in Mexico, chances are George Grayson's phone is going to ring. His expertise on the country, its drug cartels and the violence and political turmoil they leave in their wake, is regularly sought by news outlets the world over.
This week, it was violence outside of Monterrey – 49 brutal murders. Grayson appeared Monday night on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams to discuss the crime discovered over the weekend. The interview was also aired Tuesday morning on NBC’s Today Show.
“Los Zetas's want to show that they are the meanest, most cruel criminal organization in the Americas,” Grayson told NBC Reporter Mark Potter.
The drug cartel Los Zetas initially claimed responsibility for the murders, though the organization reportedly hung banners from overpasses on Tuesday claiming it was not involved.
Grayson, the Class of 1938 Professor of Government, is the co-author of the recently released book, "The Executioner’s Men: Los Zetas, Rouge Soldiers, Criminal Entrepreneurs and the Shadow State They Created." He also authored "Mexico: Narco-Violence and a Failed State"
When news of the Monterrey crime initially broke, Grayson was first quoted by the Reuters news agency. That story was also picked up by MSNBC, Yahoo! News, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun and the Orlando Sentinel.
