William & Mary places 3rd in IDT Programming Contest
On May 19, 2012, Innovative Defense Technologies (IDT), a Software Development company based in Arlington, VA, specializing in Automated Software Testing applications, held its annual Collegiate Programming Contest. Several teams representing various Universities participated in the event. The event final were held at the Virginia Tech Research Center, in Arlington, VA. Third place was award to the team from William & Mary (James Rountree and Gregory Smith).
The purpose of this type of event is "To promote interest in automated software testing in the areas of computer science, engineering, mathematics, problem solving, teamwork, and innovative technology at the college level." – Thom Garrett, IDT Contest Chair.
The focus of the competition is centered on innovative and creative methods of implementing Automated Software Testing. Solutions are judged on aspects of the software development life cycle including:
- Requirements Traceability
- Design Architecture / Documentation / Delivery
- Programming / Performance / Elegance / etc.
- Tools selection
- Accuracy
- Presentation (only the top 3 teams are selected for presentations)
IDT opens the competition via web site with description of problem and guidelines. Teams work remotely over a period of time (about 30 days), then submit their solution. IDT then holds a presentation day for students to present and demonstrate their solution.
