Eddy Zhang is the Recipient of a 2011 Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship
Eddy Zheng Zhang has been selected as a recipient of the 2011 Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. While the department has been the home of two prior finalists (Anne Huang, B.S. '05, and Meghan Revelle, Ph.D. '10), Eddy is the first William & Mary student to be a recipient of this prestigious scholarship.
The Google Anita Borg Scholarship was first launched in 2004 when a group of Googlers decided to establish a program that would honor the work of their friend and colleague, Dr. Anita Borg. Google honors Anita's memory and supports women in technology with these scholarships in the hope of encouraging women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders in the field. It is awarded based on the strength of each candidate's academic background and demonstrated leadership. In 2011, recipients each receive a $10,000 award for the 2011-12 academic year and are invited the attend the Annual Google Scholars' Retreat at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California.
Eddy's recent work on chip-level multiprocessing (CMP) program optimizations has yielded papers accepted for ASPLOS'11, PPoPP'10, ICS'10, and IPDPS'08 — all top conferences in her field of research. Her paper in PPoPP'10 received a Best Paper Award; a paper on earlier work submitted to QEST'08 received a Best Student Paper Award. Researchers in the Advanced Compiler Technologies group at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center are interested in applying some of the methods she has developed to improve the performance of their Power7 systems. Eddy is to spend the summer working with researchers in the eXtreme Computing Group at Microsoft Research who are interested in applying her methods to accelerate the training of machine learning algorithms for data center workloads. Eddy also served a year as the President of the Computer Science Graduate Student Association at the College of William & Mary.
