Virginia Symphony to perform free concert at W&M
The Virginia Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert at William & Mary’s Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 3. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m.
The “Symphony Under the Stars” concert will feature highlights of the orchestra’s 2015-2016 season. The event is sponsored by William & Mary, the City of Williamsburg and the W&M Student Assembly.
Benjamin Rous will conduct the concert, which will include pieces by Beethoven, Bartok, Tchaikovsky as well as 20th-century compositions such as “New York, New York,” “Blue Tango,” and selections from “Hair.”
Several members of the W&M music faculty are part of the Virginia Symphony, often playing the instruments they teach about at the university: Joanne White, flute; Sherie Lake Aguirre, oboe; Laura Leisring, bassoon; David Vonderheide, trumpet; Rodney Martell, bass trombone; and Peter DuBeau, tuba.
Guests are invited to bring family and friends, beach chairs and blankets. Personal coolers and picnic baskets will be permitted; however, no external alcohol will be allowed.
The Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre is located at 121 Ukrop Way. In the event of rain, the concert will be held at Phi Beta Kappa Hall.
