Tomoyuki Sasaki wins Phi Beta Kappa Award
Dr. Tomoyuki Sasaki, associate chair of departmental affairs and associate professor of Japanese studies, has been awarded the 2022 Phi Beta Kappa Award for the Advancement of Scholarship. This distinction is reserved for faculty members who have not yet attained the rank of Professor but have demonstrated excellent scholarly achievement and display promise for continued success.
“The combination of a highly innovative approach to the material, scholarly rigor, interdisciplinary breadth, and accessibility is very rare in academic writing. Add to this the oft-mentioned timeliness of the research—and we get an exemplary scholar whose work is relevant far beyond its immediate cultural context,” said William & Mary’s Alpha Chapter, the first Phi Beta Kappa chapter in the nation.
Dr. Sasaki specializes in history and cultural studies with particular attention to high-speed economic growth, inequality, uneven development, and democracy. His courses include Cold War Cultures and Japanese Cinema. Students enrolled in Introduction to Japanese Studies have also benefit from his instruction.
Dr. Sasaki’s achievement is a great honor for William & Mary’s Modern Languages and Literature department. Congratulations Dr. Sasaki’s for your stellar work and recognition from Phi Beta Kappa.
