Professor Riofrio gives a lecture as part of Latine Heritage Month
Professor Riofrio will present next Tuesday, October 15th, his lecture titled "Hope, Change and Loss: L.A. Gentrification in Popular Culture. The talk will delve into the complexities of gentrification and its associated concepts, such as urban renewal and neighborhood restoration. Through a mixed media presentation, the lecture will examine two cultural "texts": the Latinx series Gentefied, set in Boyle Heights, and a firsthand ethnography of Echo Park. The discussion will highlight the experiences of these two neighborhoods in Los Angeles that have undergone two decades of gentrification, affecting their Latinx and African American communities.
