One of the assignments for students in GRMN 333, Homeland (In)Securities, was to organize hands-on events for das deutsche Haus to convey to other students some aspect of German conceptions of Heimat. At an interactive music hour, students presented songs from the world over that reminded them of "home," and everyone chimed in with their favorite pieces of music (including little-known anthems of Williamsburg and several cities in NoVA). Another afternoon was spent coloring landscapes and watching one of the most popular films of the Heimat (and historical romance) genre, Sissi (1955), about the Austrian Empress. A week later, we learned about the Bavarian
Schuhplattler and then practiced a short sequence of steps (including a Hochsprung!) of this traditional dance. Our final event consisted of a long walk through the Matoaka Woods, with students telling us about the history of the outdoor and hiking movement in German history. Enjoy the pictures!
