Congratulations to Prof. Brehm!
The French & Francophone Studies Program is delighted to congratulate Prof. Brehm on his tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor!
Professor Brehm is a specialist in nineteenth-century French literature and culture with an interdisciplinary focus on the history of sound and acoustics, visual culture, urban life, new media technologies, and salon culture. Reviewers of his recent book Kaleidophonic Modernity: Transatlantic Sound, Technology, and Literature (Fordham University Press, February 2023) have been praising it as a "major achievement" that offers an "original analysis of the ways in which Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Baudelaire, Charles Cros and Walt Whitman elaborated a sonorous imaginary in their works." On campus Prof. Brehm's teaching has been equally engaging with courses about French literature, philosophy, audiovisual culture, urbanism, modernity, and the history of jazz. An accomplished musician, he has even been known to bring his keyboard to class! Félicitations, Prof. Brehm!
