The Department
The Mathematics Department dates back to the original Charter of the College. Mathematics was represented by one of the six Masters or Professors, and when the full faculty was assembled in 1729, the original masterships were in Divinity, Philosophy, Oriental Languages, Mathematics, the Grammar School and the Indian School. The first professor on record was Hugh Jones, who was on the faculty from 1716-1729. He is the namesake of the present site of the department: the first floor of Hugh Jones Hall.
The Department of Mathematics undergraduate program offers a major and a minor in Mathematics. Majors may choose from three concentrations. Mathematics is a major component of several graduate programs including Computational Operations Research, Computer Science, and Applied Science.

The College
William & Mary is the second oldest college in America, Chartered on February 8, 1693, by King William III and Queen Mary II of England. The College is one of only eight "Public Ivys" in the nation. The college is highly selective, offering a world-class education at an affordable price. U.S. News and World Report ranked the College as the sixth best public college in the country in 2017. There are 6,276 undergraduates and 2,341 graduate students attending the College. In the most recent freshman class, 78 percent graduated in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class. The Area
Only one hour from the Atlantic Ocean, and two hours from snow ski resorts, Williamsburg is ideally located.
