Prof. Harris research on the Camino de Santiago
Prof. Harris continued his research on the physiological demands of walking the Camino de Santiago after completing the Camino Ingles with other William & Mary faculty and students. Prof. Harris indicated that “the purpose of the trip was to aid my on-going research on aging, cardiovascular disease, and pilgrimage.” Prof. Harris has previously sent two former students to Spain to conduct research on the Camino de Santiago, Michelle Wolf (’06) and David Blitzer (’11). Both of these students received departmental honors for their research on the Camino and presented their work at national conferences, Experimental Biology (Wolf) and the American College of Sports Medicine (Blitzer). In addition, Michelle Wolf’s work was recently published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine. Due to the fruitful nature of these endeavors, Prof. Harris stated that he traveled to Santiago and completed the Camino Ingles “to gain a better understanding of the logistics of our research and to formulate new avenues of research for myself and future students.” The work done by Prof. Harris and his William & Mary Colleagues who are part of the Institute of Pilgrimage Studies was recently highlighted in the Spanish media. In addition, some of this work will be presented at the 2nd Annual Symposium for Pilgrimage Studies hosted at the College of William & Mary, October 4-6th, 2013.
