Prof. Harris was part of a panel of invited speakers at the 3rd International Forum of Sport Industry in Taipei, Taiwan. The forum was hosted by the University of Taipei and jointly sponsored by the New Taipei City Government and the Chinese Taipei Triathlon Association which coordinated the event with its national championship in Yi-Lan. The international forum featured speakers from China, Germany, Korea, Japan, and the United States with experts in the fields of sports nutrition, swim training and altitude training as well as the marketing and development of sports nutrition products. The speakers included Zeyi Yang, M.D., who is a professor at the Beijing University of Sports, President of the China Sports Nutrition & Food Society of CIFST and part of the Antidoping Center of the Chinese General Administration of Sport. Prof. Yang gave an overview of current recommendations for sports nutrition and training in endurance athletes. Joining Prof. Harris as one of two speakers from the United States was Dr. John Ivy, Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin and Chief Science Officer for NeoGenis Labs. Dr. Ivy gave three lectures over the course of the conference centered on the proper timing for nutrition to optimize performance and the development of products at NeoGenis to boost nitric oxide. Information on altitude training was provided by Prof. Ma Fuhai from the Duoba National Altitude Training Base in Xining City, Qinghai, China. Based on his extensive experience with the Japanese National Swim Team, Prof. Futoshi Ogita from the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Japan gave a lecture focused on high intensity interval training in swimmers. In a slight departure from science, Tony Jacobs, a director of three different sports nutrition companies (Pharmalink International, BerryPharma, and Pacific Deep Ocean Biotech) talked about the importance of globalization. The link between industry, science and the preparation of professionals involved in sports nutrition was presented by Prof. Hyon Park, professor of Sports Medicine at Kyung Hee University in Korea. Prof. Harris was the final speaker of the forum with a lecture on “Physiology of the Marathon: from undergraduate teaching to research and performance”. Going last Prof. Harris also had the opportunity to tie together all the information from the forum emphasizing “the growing complexity of exercise science which requires 1) robust and valid scientific inquiry 2) vigilant awareness against simple answers offered by some marketed sports nutrition products and 3) and the recognition of the increasing collaborative work that is necessary among scientists and corporations in the expanding global community.” Following the forum, speakers were invited to observe the national championships for the Chinese Taipei Triathlon Association in Yi-lan and served as honorary starters (see pictures).
