Julie Barnes Studies Hypoxia
"The Effects of Intermittent Hypoxic Exposure on Mood State and Cognition and Looking into a Mountain" - the title of junior Julie Barnes' project is quite a mouthful. This past summer, Julie combined her love of mountains with her interest in science through her research in the Jack Borgenicht Altitude Physiology Research Facility. Working alongside her professor and advisor, Professor Kambis, Julie studied the physiological effects of hypoxia, or reduced oxygen in the body caused by reduced oxygen in the air at high altitudes. She traveled to Canada later in the summer to hike in the Rockies and to experience real mountains first hand.
