During the next two years William and Mary is celebrating the fifty-year anniversary of the admission of African Americans to the college (2017), and the hundred-year anniversary of white women’s acceptance as students (2018). This symposium speaks to both of these firsts and interrogates the desegregation of higher education as it relates to women.
The panelists cover an expansive period, with Professor Mary Kelley focusing on gender and higher education in Early America, Professor Mia Bay drawing our attention to nineteenth and twentieth-century developments in the United States in relation to higher education and African American women, and Professor Louise Morley finishing the day with her transnational analyses of the current neoliberal era in higher education.
