Melvin Ely Wins Literary Award from Library of Virginia for Israel on the Appomattox

Melvin Patrick Ely's Israel on the Appomattox received the
Literary Award for nonfiction from the Library of Virginia. That award
honors the best book of the year written on a Virginia topic or by a
Virginia author. Professor Ely's study documents and analyzes the free
black community of Israel Hill in Prince Edward County, Virginia, from
the 1790s through the Civil War. Professor Ely is a native of Richmond,
Virginia.
