2019 Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award
Together with the Graduate Student Association, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased to recognize this year's winner of the Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award. This award is intended to recognize faculty who serve as exemplary mentors to graduate students in Arts & Sciences. Karin Wulf, Professor of History and Director of the Omohundro Institute, has been chosen for this honor based on several enthusiastic letters of nomination from graduate students in History.
The Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award is made possible through partnership and support from the A&S Graduate Studies Advisory Board, the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate and Professional Studies, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, and the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. The Graduate Student Association was instrumental in initiating this award.
Award Citation for Professor Karin Wulf
Alongside her role as executive director for the Omohundro Institute and her teaching and research commitments, Professor Wulf has proven to be a tireless advocate and mentor for graduate students in the Lyon G. Tyler Department of History. She has worked to create opportunities that enrich students’ experiences and professional development as scholars. She goes out of her way to ensure that students have opportunities to engage with the most recent scholarship and the larger academic community.
Referred to by her advisees as a “model of scholarly excellence,” they describe her active engagement in refining their research and writing skills, particularly noting her incisive and quick feedback on drafts. Moreover, she has a special ability to foster community among students, encouraging a climate of mutual support. Students cite her as "genuinely caring and supportive" and commend her for “making herself available at each stage” of graduate study and beyond.
For the many ways in which she serves as a role model for graduate mentorship, it is fitting that Professor Wulf be recognized with the 2019 Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award.
