Ph.D in Applied Science
The Department of Applied Science is an interdisciplinary graduate department that focuses on the Ph.D., which also offers an M.S. degree in some cases. Both degrees can be customized and focused into a number of concentrations in the physical and natural sciences. Graduate students and their advisory committees plan individualized degree programs that best suit each student's educational goals. Applied Science graduate students have a wide variety of backgrounds and professional interests. Coursework, one-on-one meetings with faculty members, association with other graduate students, and seminars are all a part of an entering graduate student's experience. The coursework component of each student's curriculum is highly flexible and is planned individually with his or her faculty advisory committee. The Applied Science Ph.D. is a fully funded program offering a Graduate Assistantship stipend of $31,000 per academic year, in addition to covering the cost of tuition & fees, and health insurance.

Advice and Considerations
For advice on admissions to our graduate program, please review this memo from the faculty (pdf) about applying to our doctoral program.
Your personal statement should indicate your specific area of interest.
Your letters of recommendation will be most useful if they are written by scientists or faculty members who can attest to your character and qualifications best suited for our graduate program.
Please review faculty web pages to identify whose work is of most interest to you. Faculty members can be contacted directly via email, phone, or Zoom. These conversations are the first step in defining programs of study that best suit your professional goals.
Once admitted, all students who are required to submit TOEFL scores are also required to take a brief diagnostic test to assess your oral communication skills. Please note that this language test can only be taken on campus and is administered at the beginning of your first semester at William & Mary.
