Assistant Professor of Government Cullen Hendrix and Sarah Glaser, Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology and Marine Science, have won the 2011 Nils Petter Gleditsch Journal of Peace Research Article of the Year Award for their article, "Civil Conflict and World Fisheries, 1952-2004." In the article, Hendrix and Glaser examine whether civil conflict has sector-specific effects that threaten food and economic security. Their results indicate that conflict intensity negatively affects fish catch, though population displacement and proximity of the conflict to the coast do not. These results have important implications for regional fisheries management organizations that, as a result, need to pay close attention to the effects of sociopolitical factors on the use of aquatic resources.
