Background
Professor Benes received her BA from Wellesley College in 1993 and her PhD from the University of Washington-Seattle in 2001. She specializes in the cultural and intellectual history of ninteenth-century Germany and modern Europe. Her research interests include the history of linguistic thought, nationalism, ethnology and racial theory, and Europe's relations with the wider world. She recently published In Babel's Shadow: Language, Philology, and the Nation in Nineteenth-Century Germany (2008) in the series Kritik at Wayne State University Press.
