Faculty Absences from Campus

This process is intended to provide guidelines for the purpose of:
- Ensuring that students are receiving the quality instruction from the faculty members assigned to teach individual courses
- Providing accountability for sanctioned absences from campus for faculty research and teaching projects
- Providing clear and consistent guidelines for equitable distribution of excused absences from campus for all faculty members
Faculty members are expected to be present for all officially scheduled class times (including during finals). Faculty members should not miss more than one week (five consecutive days) of classes at a time, with an absolute maximum of two such absences per semester (ten days in toto). Absences not in accordance with these guidelines require the advance written consent of both the unit leader (Chair and/or Director) and the Dean of Arts & Sciences.
It is the responsibility of the faculty member to arrange for appropriate coverage ahead of time to meet class obligations.
