2016 Faculty Governance Award
Citation for Nicholas S. Popper
Even before gaining tenure in Spring 2015, Professor Popper developed an extraordinary record of commitment to governance. He has served as the History Department's representative to Swem Library, to the St. Andrews - William & Mary Joint Degree Program, and to the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, where he has also served as a board member and on the institute's Fellowship Committee, Jamestown Prize Committee, and George III Archives Fellowship Committee. Within the department, he has served on two search committees and on the Departmental Affairs Committee (encompassing personnel, merit review, and promotion), Prizes and Awards Committee, Social Committee, and Undergraduate Program Committee, where he was instrumental in the redesign of the department's undergraduate curriculum. For Arts & Sciences he has served on the Marshall, Mitchell, and Rhodes Nominating Committee, Fulbright Scholarship Committee, and Charles Center Summer Fellowship Committee; and also contributed extraordinary service as a two-year appointed Fellow in the Center for the Liberal Arts, helping to establish the new College Curriculum. Beyond the College, he has served as reviewer for the academic journals, History Compass and Journal of British Studies.
For his many and unflagging contributions, it is fitting that Professor Popper be recognized with the Arts & Sciences 2016 Faculty Governance Award.
