Majoring in English
The Department of English offers a B.A. in English. Are you thinking of declaring a major in English? Most of our students report that they choose English because they love reading and talking about literature. In our department, we offer courses that speak to almost any literary interest, from the Old English poem Beowulf to American indigenous literatures. Our students spend their time learning how to analyze and articulate their own responses to literary texts, and improving their critical thinking, writing, and collaboration skills. A major in English is a gateway into a wide range of careers in the professional, corporate, educational, and nonprofit fields.
Opportunities for undergraduate research include independent study, summer research scholarships, research assistantships, and internships. During the senior year a student who qualifies may pursue Honors in literature or creative writing.
The program affords students unusual freedom in choice of courses. For a full description of English major requirements, consult the Undergraduate Catalog.
