W&M Welcomes Robert Reid-Pharr, Second Sara and Jess Cloud Visiting Distinguished Professor
Robert Reid-Pharr joins us this semester as the English Department’s second Sara and Jess Cloud Visiting Professor. Professor Reid-Pharr is the Distinguished and Presidential Professor of English and American Studies at the City University of New York’s Graduate School and University Center, where he has taught since 2001. He has also been appointed to a number of distinguished visiting professorships at home and abroad, including the Edward Said Visiting Chair of American Studies at the American University of Beirut, the Drue Heinz Visiting Professorship of English at the University of Oxford, the Carlisle and Barbara Moore Distinguished Visiting Professorship of English at the University of Oregon, and the Frederic Ives Carpenter Visiting Assistant Professorship of English at the University of Chicago. Professor Reid-Pharr is the author of three books–Conjugal Union: The Body, the House, and the Black American, published by Oxford University Press in 1999, Black Gay Man: Essays, issued by New York University Press in 2001 and winner of the 2002 Publishing Triangle Randy Shilts Award for Gay Nonfiction, and Once You Go Black: Choice, Desire, and the Black American Intellectual, published by New York University Press in 2007. He is also the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters. This semester he is teaching an English course cross-listed with Africana Studies and American Studies on the Black Atlantic, and he has already presented one of the three lectures he is scheduled to give during his stay with us. His first lecture–on “Lorca in Harlem”–was given Sept. 20. His next lecture, hosted by the American Studies Program, will be given on Oct. 18 at noon in the Sadler Center’s Tidewater B.
