Artist in Residence Tom De Haven Joins the Faculty
Each year the Class of 1939 Artist in Residence Endowment provides funding for a visiting professor. The English department is happy
this year to host Richmond author and VCU Professor of English Tom De
Haven.
Professor De Haven is the author of 16 books of fiction, including the Derby Dugan Trilogy (Funny Papers, Derby Dugan's Depression Funnies, and Dugan Under Ground), Freaks' Amour, Sunburn Lake, and It's Superman!
He recently finished a book-length essay on the historical and cultural
importance of Superman for Yale University Press. He is also the
co-editor of a forthcoming collection of original crime stories called Richmond Noir.
Professor
De Haven has received an American Book Award and the Library of
Virginia prize. He has twice received National Endowment for the Arts
fellowships. He is also a regular reviewer for the New York Times Book Review
and president of the board of directors for the Norton Island (Maine)
artists' residency. He has been teaching creative writing at VCU since
1990.
We are very proud to have Professor De Haven join us as this year's Artist in Residence.
