Zachary Rice recieves the Robert A. Barry Award
Every year, the Economics Department gives out the Robert A. Barry award for the Outstanding Graduating Senior. The award is given to the graduating economics major determined by the faculty to be the most outstanding contributor to the department. This year, the recipient of the Robert A. Barry award is Zachary Rice. Zach Rice is an outstanding young scholar and a cosmopolitan student, double majoring in Economics and Africana Studies. He studied abroad in Senegal, completed a summer internship there, and will do an internship in South Africa next summer. His particular interest is the relationship between education and economic development. In 2009, he received the Trice Fellowship to pursue a five-year Bachelors of Arts/Master of Public Policy program at the College, and has performed exceptionally well in his undergraduate courses. Zach Rice is a budding applied economist with a passion for solving real-world problems.
The award is given in honor of former Professor Robert Allen Barry. Professor Barry joined the Economics Department at the College of William and Mary in 1964. He served as chair of the department from 1980 to 1986, and also served on virtually every major faculty committee at the College. He was an outstanding and motivating teacher, quietly translating the arcana of economic theory into language that could be readily grasped - and believed - by undergraduate students. Professor Barry served as an inspiration to the College for 35 years. The Barry award consists of a plaque and check for $500. In recent years, the award has been funded by Ken Anderson '79 and Mark Kulish '81. We thank them for their continuing support.
