Denys Poshyvanyk Receives an NSF CAREER Award
Denys Poshyvanyk has been selected to receive a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation. The CAREER Program offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their universities.
The $460K award for the next five years will support Denys' research proposal, Enabling License Compliance Analysis and Verification for Evolving Software. Denys, working with his students, has proposed a novel unified model to help software developers license software and (re)use components while complying with legal requirements. Their approach will investigate novel combinations of information retrieval, internet-scale source code search, repository mining, and static program analysis approaches to detect the origins of software components. They also will rely on a feedback-driven hybrid blending of information retrieval and machine learning techniques for identifying the licenses of components with a high degree of accuracy. The model they have proposed then will unify these building blocks for license compliance analysis and verification to reason about given software, components, dependencies, and licenses, as well as their trustworthiness, constraints, and existing or potential legal compliance issues.
