W&M Team Places First On-site and Second in the Region in the ACM ICPC
On
November 5, 2011, the Department of Computer Science sent two teams of
students to Christopher Newport University to participate in the 2011 ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest Mid-Atlantic Region. This contest is held every year to select teams that will compete in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals, which will be held in Warsaw, Poland in May.
This year's participants included Aaron Dufour, Michael Christensen, and Brett Cooley for team 1, and Jeff Soosiah, Kevin Ji, and Alex Valentin for team 2.
Our teams performed exceedingly well. Team 1, William and Mary Gold, earned the title of First on-site, the third year in a row for a W&M team. They solved 4 of the 8 problems posed in the 5 hours of the contest. For their efforts, William and Mary Gold received a first on-site plaque, which can be seen on the ACM bulletin board in the Computer Science Department. Team 2, William and Mary Green, placed fourth on site and 55th overall.
More importantly, out of 166 teams, William and Mary Gold placed second overall in the mid-Atlantic region. Their second place standing in the region means that there is a nontrivial chance that William and Mary Gold could be invited to participate in the ACM-ICPC World Finals. We are waiting to hear from ICPC organizers at the world-wide close of the 2011 regional programming contests.
