"I think myself more indebted to my father for this than for all the other luxuries his cares and affections placed within my reach." -Thomas Jefferson (W&M class of 1762), on his classical education
Students of Classical Studies gain historical perspective, critical thinking, and communication skills. Language instruction in Ancient Greek and Latin can reveal deeper meanings of classic texts, and provides a basis for learning modern languages. Classical Civilization courses provide a solid background for understanding modern cultures.
Many undergraduates take courses in Classical Studies as electives – either to complement other majors or to satisfy basic curiosity about a topic or a degree requirement.
The Department of Classical Studies offers a B.A. in Classical Studies. If you wish to major in the classics, we have several degree paths to choose from. We also offer a minor in Classical Studies. The thoughtful selection of elective courses will allow you to focus your Classical Studies degree even further, if you wish.
