About the Beckman Scholars Program

Beckman Scholars Program

Established by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, this program recognizes exceptionally talented researchers in Chemistry, Biology, or Applied Science. William & Mary was one of the original 20 institutions selected for this program and remains a frequent recipient of this prestigious award.

Award Benefits and Support

The Beckman Scholarship is designed to provide comprehensive support for a student’s research journey over an extended period. The award includes:

  • Research Stipends: Funding for two full summers of undergraduate research.

  • Academic Scholarship: A one-year research scholarship during the academic year.

  • Living Expenses: Free on-campus housing during the summer research periods.

  • Research Costs: Coverage for travel expenses to conferences and necessary research supplies.

Scholar Responsibilities

Being named a Beckman Scholar is both an honor and a commitment to the scientific community:

  • Mentorship: Scholars work under the close supervision of a faculty mentor and are required to mentor junior students within their lab.

  • Symposium: Participation in the Beckman Foundation's annual research symposium is mandatory.

  • Academic Excellence: Scholars must maintain a high level of research productivity and academic standing throughout the life of the award.

"The goals of the Beckman Scholars Program and the goals of William and Mary dovetail perfectly." — Professor Saha
