Research in Art & Art History
Studio artists and art historians have very different approaches to research.
Studio art research typically focuses on the process of the professional artist. It's an exploration of techniques, media, and process to try and determine what will work for the intended project. Studio art research is analogous to laboratory experiments in the sciences.
Research in art history looks at works of art and the society from which they originate. Art Historians use some of the same tools as sociologists, anthropologists, and historians; but through the lens of art.
All Art & Art History students will have the opportunity to do independent research, including Honors projects. You may also earn academic credit for internships.
At W&M, we have many tools that will help both the studio artist and art historian. The Visual Resources Center is a database of digital images. It is used for inspiration as well as research. The Andrews Gallery is used as space where students can curate an exhibit, or display their original works. Swem Library's Art & Art History Research Guide can help students find relevant journals and databases.
The Charles Center coordinates much of the funding available to support Undergraduate Research.
