Mike Jabbur

Professor Jabbur specializes in contemporary utilitarian/studio pottery, with education and experience in pottery, ceramic sculpture, and graphic design.  In his studio practice, he produces soda-fired stoneware and oxidation-fired porcelain pottery.  Areas of research include kiln design and firing (gas, soda, and oxidation), clay and glaze chemistry, historical global ceramics, and contemporary American and Japanese ceramics.

Jabbur was awarded the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts 2018-19 Professional Fellowship in recognition of his studio work.  He has had several solo exhibitions at galleries, including Charlie Cummings Gallery (Gainesville, FL), Crimson Laurel Gallery (Bakersville, NC), Lillstreet Art Center (Chicago, IL), and Red Lodge Clay Center (Red Lodge, MT), and has participated in over 100 group exhibitions.  He has taught workshops at colleges and ceramic centers around the country, including Red Star Studios (Kansas City, MO), Touchstone Center for Crafts (Farmington, PA), West Virginia University (Morgantown, WV), and Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA).  Articles and images of his work have been published in text books, art books, and periodicals, including The Art of Creating and Teaching Wheel-Thrown Ceramics(Cognella Academic Publishing), 500 Teapots vol. 2 (Lark Books), and Ceramics Monthly.  The American Ceramic Society produced an instructional DVD entitled Precise Imprecision, in which Jabbur demonstrates his studio process. 

 At William & Mary, Jabbur has served on college and departmental committees, while also helping to develop new curriculum in Studio Art.  In the classroom, he emphasizes utilitarian ceramics processes, contemporary craft theory, and historical context—with the aim of encouraging students’ personal expression, rooted in strong craftsmanship and historical awareness.
