Alberta (Birdie) Boone '94
"We are not only what we eat, but how we eat it, too."
. . . For me, this assertion evokes the momentousness of the body to mind connection. I am interested in emotional responses to domestic objects and how culture, habits, and environments affect personal identity through simple acts of daily living.
The influence of a domestic object lies in its ability to inspire meaning through nurturing acts, repeated over time, that become familiar and comfortable. The ability to engage in sensual expression is essential to deciphering this domestic intimacy. Thus, my pots are not only useful objects, but they are also subjects that have the ability to affect their users’ consciousness and to act upon the domestic spaces they occupy.

About the Artist
Alberta "Birdie" Boone received her M.F.A. in ceramics from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, in 2005 and her B.A. in studio fine arts from William & Mary in 1994. In 2007 she was selected to be an artist in residence at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana, and she received the Bray's Lincoln Fellowship in 2008. Birdie has worked and taught at Peter’s Valley Craft Center in New Jersey, Watershed Center for Ceramics in Maine, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee, and the Worcester Center for Crafts in Massachusetts, among others.
