The Department of Anthropology is pleased to announce Mark D. Anderson as the winner of the 2021 Vinson Sutlive Prize for his book From Boas to Black Power: Racism, Liberalism, and American Anthropology. The Department of Anthropology awards the Sutlive Prize to the best book published—in any discipline—that uses anthropological perspectives in order to examine historical contexts and/or the role of the past in the present. This year, the jury sought nominations of authors who share the Department of Anthropology’s commitment to struggle with and overcome the white supremacist and colonialist foundations of our discipline and to understand the historical legacies of racism and inequity. Dr. Anderson is a professor and chair of the UC Santa Cruz Department of Anthropology. We look forward to hosting Dr. Anderson for a virtual lecture in October. Dr. Anderson will serve as a juror for the upcoming Sutlive prize.
