Dear colleagues,

As the beginning of the semester creeps ever closer,  we would like to invite you all to come and enjoy the magic of Ewell on the first day of classes. Our tasty food, sparkling beverages, and friendly people will be waiting for you starting at 4:30 on Wednesday January 25th. Some of us are new – there’s a small Acting Dean on the loose – and we also recently welcomed our new Communications Director, Abbie Schaefer, to A&S. Please come and stay a minute, an hour, or several hours. Otherwise the small Acting Dean will have to eat all the food herself.

Some of you have no doubt been reading recent coverage of AI writing programs such as ChatGPT. Thank you to Adam Barger of STLI and Liz Losh of English and American Studies for collaborating on the attached guidelines. We thought it might be helpful for faculty to have some guidelines on how to approach the use of ChatGPT in courses this semester. I have created a working group to spend the semester hearing from all of you on what you would like to see in lengthier, more detailed guidelines going forward. We hope to release them at the end of the semester or in the summer. Thank you to Liz Losh for agreeing to chair the committee, and to Adam Barger (STLI), Dave Gilbert (Dean of Students Office), Matt Haug (Philosophy), Lori Jacobson (Writing Resources Center), and Dan Runfola (Applied Science) for agreeing to serve on the working group.

Have you done your Cornerstone security awareness training? If not, a delicious treat awaits you and you must partake of your treat by midnight tonight. The treat lasts for approximately 15 minutes.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Take care, Suzanne
